In the oil and gas drilling industry, cellulose derivatives such as Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) and Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) are critical additives used to formulate high-performance water-based drilling fluids. CMC, typically used in its sodium salt form (CMC-Na), functions primarily as a fluid loss control agent by forming a thin, low-permeability filter cake on the wellbore wall to prevent the escape of drilling fluid into porous formations, while also providing viscosity for cuttings suspension. HEC serves as a non-ionic viscosifier and stabilizer, offering excellent tolerance to salts and electrolytes, which makes it particularly effective in brine-based or high-salinity drilling mud systems where it enhances hole cleaning and ensures wellbore stability.
